What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a key component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), practiced for thousands of years to promote healing, balance, and overall wellness. It involves the gentle insertion of extremely thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body, known as acupoints. These points lie along meridians—pathways through which vital energy, or Qi (pronounced "chee"), is believed to flow.
According to TCM philosophy, when Qi becomes blocked or imbalanced due to stress, injury, poor diet, or illness, it can lead to discomfort or disease. Acupuncture aims to restore the natural flow of energy, supporting the body's innate healing processes and improving physical, mental, and emotional health.
How Acupuncture Works
While the traditional explanation centers on the concept of Qi, modern research suggests that acupuncture may stimulate the nervous system, increase blood circulation, and trigger the release of the body's natural pain-relieving chemicals—such as endorphins and serotonin. This helps reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and promote a sense of relaxation and well-being.
What Conditions Can Acupuncture Help With?
Acupuncture can support you in many different ways. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, I look at the whole picture – your symptoms, your health and how you're feeling – to create a treatment that's individual to you. This is a list of the most common conditions I see in my clinic. However, if your symptoms are not listed here, it doesn’t mean I am unable to help – please get in touch and we can talk about what you're experiencing and whether acupuncture may be suitable for you.
Practical Information
What to Wear
Loose, comfortable clothing is ideal. Depending on your treatment, you may need to expose certain areas — you will always be kept warm and your modesty respected.
What to Bring
Please bring a list of any medications or supplements you are currently taking. If you have any recent test results or medical letters relevant to your condition, these can be helpful too.
Before Your Appointment
Try to eat a light meal 1–2 hours beforehand and avoid alcohol on the day. Arrive a few minutes early so you have time to settle in and complete your intake form.
After Your Appointment
Allow yourself some quiet time after treatment if possible. Drink plenty of water and avoid strenuous activity for the rest of the day. Some people feel deeply relaxed; others feel energised — both are normal.
